Athgreany Stone Circle

Athgreany Stone Circle

East Ireland | County Wicklow

Athgreany Stone Circle (also known as Piper's Stones) is located at Athgreany townland, just off the road N81, in County Wicklow (about 2,5 km south from Hollywood). This Bronze Age stone circle has a diameter of 23 meters and consists of 14 granite boulders, the tallest of which is 1.8 meters. Originally there were much more stones, which probably were broken and carried away for the purpose of building. About 30 metres to the north-east there is massive free-standing boulder. According to the local legend, that is the piper, and the stones in the circle are dancers, who were turned into stone for having dared to amuse themselves on the Sabbath. The name "Piper's Stones" derives from this legend. On some of the stones may be seen weathered rock art: grooves and cup-marks.
